Two-family houses have a main staircase that both families often use, and it takes heavy wear. We carpet each step separately with a firm pad so the edges stay sharp, and fasten it well so nothing creeps or lifts. A runner with wood showing at the sides is an option where the treads are good.
The covering clause in Bronx leases

How long does it take to install carpet?
Most rooms take a few hours and a typical apartment is done in a day. Stairs add time. You can use the room as soon as we finish.
